| Painting The Woman [2nd Stage Of Painting] |

Having Successfully set down in paint the large masses of our picture, we are ready to begin the second stage of painting. This will bring the whole thing, from top to bottom, one step forward. (See Plate 6.)
First come the eyes. Mix a dark tone of viridian, yellow ochre and cadmium red deep. With this, draw the edge of the upper lid of each eye, using a No. 2 round bristle brush. Observe carefully the eye's distance from the brow; also the distance from the center of the nose to the inside end of the eye. Next, and still using the same tone, paint the iris. (Though the iris is round, note how much the lid droops to cover the upper part.) Paint the shadow in the corner of the eyes and, running up to the brows, sweep it out to complete the shape of the upper lid and brow.
If necessary, continue to deepen the shadow down the side of the nose and under the nostrils. Paint in the dark of the nostrils. Deepen the shadow under the chin; also, the side of the face from the cheekbone right down to the chin, as well as any shadow on the neck and shoulders.
On the upper lip, use cadmium red. Lighten the lower lip by adding white. For the shadow side and corners, add alizarin to the cadmium red.
To complete this stage, develop the shadows in the dress.
