Painting The Woman [5th Stage Of Painting]

Our Next Move is to add some cool tones. Refer again to the color plates on the brunette for this—pages 42 and 43. Such cool tones are made by mixing viridian in a small amount to yellow ochre; add also a little cadmium red light, being careful the final result still remains on the green side.

These cool tones occur under the lower lip, along the jaw and neck on the shadow side, and at the corner of the mouth on the light side. Add some of this cool torn; to the light flesh and paint down the edge of the cheek (on the light side). This will both soften the edge and cause it to turn into the background.

Go back to the eyes and lighten or darken—according to which is needed—the brown of the iris. This brown consists of viridian and cadmium red deep; yellow ochre will lighten it. Next, paint in the eye's pupil. This aperture through the iris appears the darkest of all the eye tones; it can be painted either with ivory black or with a mixture of viridian and ultramarine deep.

The light areas of the eyeball are never white or even as light as they seem. Don't paint them too light or the likeness will be hurt and the whole eye will jump out of place. Be especially careful not to get these areas too light on the shadow side of the eye. For the eyeball tone —the "white of the eye"—mix white with ivory black; then warm it with a touch of yellow ochre.

While the position of the high light of the eye will depend, like all high lights, on the direction of the light rays, it will normally occur just at the edge of the iris where it faces directly the source of light. This high light is generally painted too large, which destroys the likeness of the eye. It should be very tiny and, to accomplish this, take a brush with a thin handle which comes almost to a point. Touch the tip of the handle (not the hairs) to your white paint and pull the brush straight up and away, bearing a fine tip of paint. Carry this to the eye and just touch the painting, leaving only a very small dot. This will put the sparkle in the eye.

Final Painting Done With Green Key

This painting was made entirely with the green key palette opposite. Arrange these colors on your painting palette approximately as shown, keeping in mind that each patch of color should he at least four times the area here. In mixing, follow also this plan, mixing generally from left to right.

At this stage, darken the brows if necessary. Use ivory black to complete the painting of the hair, adding viridian and yellow ochre for the cool reflected lights in the dark side. The blue high lights are made by adding white to the black areas, alizarin to the warm. In painting the hair, brush it from the head out as it grows.
